“Diamonds are an investment. When people no longer want to see Liz and I on the screen, then we can sell off a few baubles.” Richard Burton, Actor
Are diamonds an adornment or an investment?
It’s only been in the last 150 years with improvements in cutting and mining that diamonds have been put into the hands of the masses. Still, the most beautiful and rare diamonds have always belonged to royalty and extremely wealthy individuals. There is an undeniable link between rarity and beauty when it comes to diamonds which make them so sought after.
In the early 70’s, new cutting styles were discovered, intensifying diamond color and revolutionizing the diamond industry. During this period white diamonds remained the standard for engagement rings and jewelry, while colored diamonds quietly emerged as a sound investment and a symbol of prestige and beauty for collectors and connoisseurs.
With the new millennia fancy colored diamonds have surfaced as a major symbol of status and style with the Hollywood elite. Over the last decade red carpets have glittered with celebrities bejewelled in the most beautiful pink and yellow stones. Off the red carpet, celebrities like Victoria Beckham have often been seen flaunting lavish earrings, bracelets, rings and necklaces studded with pink diamonds. Even Hilary Clinton wore the famous 4.23 carat “Kahn Canary” flawless diamond to President Bill Clinton's Inaugural Ball. However, in 2007, when Jenifer Lopez flashed her 6 carat dazzling pink diamond engagement ring, the world really took notice. Interest in colored stones ignited.
Hollywood moguls don’t just flaunt their gems, they understand that this is also an investment. It's no wonder savvy and powerful women like Oprah Winfrey and Barbra Streisand are known for their collections of colored diamonds. Rumour has it that other famous colored diamond collectors on the rise include Jenifer Lopez and entertainment mogul P. Diddy. Of course, it would be remiss not to mention the late Elizabeth Taylor and her love affair with diamonds and the vast assortment she acquired. These are some of the most powerful and wealthiest individuals in the entertainment industry and they not only enjoy their gems, but their collections prove that they are putting their money to work. Like art collectors, who enjoy their pieces while they accrue value, colored diamond investors can wear or store their prized investments.
Some investors wish to store their diamonds while others enjoy wearing them and displaying them in beautiful one-of-a-kind settings. There is really little doubt that colored diamonds can be both an adornment and an investment.
